The pilot program will provide a grant of 50% of the amount of back rent you owe up to $35,000.  This is for any rent you owe from March 2020 to September 2021.

Program Timeline

• The application will close on April 1, 2022 at 5 PM.

• Awardees will be notified on April 22, 2022, if they were accepted into the program.

To be eligible for this grant, your business must:

• Have less than $2.5M in gross revenue in 2020

• Be currently operating in San Francisco and plan to stay for at least a year 

• Have unpaid rent debt accrued between March 2020 and September 2021

• Have paid all of the rent you owe since October 2021

• Not be primarily home or office-based (needs to be a public-serving business)

• Not have received $25,000 or more in grants or loan forgiveness from OEWD since March 2020 

• Must agree to attend a webinar if selected

• Have your property owner agree to extend your repayment term to at least September 2024

Your business must also meet at least 1 of these requirements:

• Be a business that was mandated to close for more than 6 months due to the City Health Orders (like a salon, gym, or bar)

• Be located in an Invest In Neighborhoods Opportunity Neighborhood commercial corridor or Cultural District. Note: The Portola does not qualify for this requirement.

• Not received more than $5,000 in grants from OEWD since March 2020

• Have an owner from a low- or extremely low-income household. Use 2021 tax return of estimated income from the last 12 months:

• Family of 1 must have an income less than $63,950

• Family of 2 must have an income less than $73,100

• Family of 3 must have an income less than $82,250

• Family of 4 must have an income less than $91,350

• Family of 5 must have an income less than $98,700

• Family of 6 must have an income less than $106,000

• Family of 7 must have an income less than $113,300

• Family of 8 or more must have an income less than $120,600

Required documents:

• Your Business Account Number (BAN). If you don't know it, you can look it up. 

• Your 2020 gross revenue

• Amount of any grants from OEWD since COVID began

  • For example Resiliency Fund, SF Shines for Reopening, Storefront Vandalism Grant, Shared Spaces Equity Grant

• How much back rent you owe from March 2020 to September 2021

To apply, please have this information ready:

• What type of lease do you have?

  • Options: annual, month-to-month, don’t have a lease, I own the storefront

• How much is your monthly rent?

• Have you paid all your rent that was due from October 2021 until now?

• How much rent do you currently owe your landlord from March 2020 to September 2021?

• Did you receive any grants from OEWD since COVID began?

  • Grants from OEWD include but are not limited to: SF Resiliency Fund, Neighborhood Mini Grant, Women’s Mini Grant, SF Shines for Reopening, and the Storefront Vandalism Relief Grant.

• Business start date – if your business has changed ownership, you may use the earliest start date for this location.

• Average number of part-time employees from February 2019 to February 2020

• Average number of full-time employees from February 2019 to February 2020

• How many people are in the business owner’s household? Include the business owner when counting the household size.

• What was the business owner’s personal household income in 2021? Use your personal 2021 tax return if you have filed or estimate your total personal income for the last 12 months. 

After you apply:

• you will receive a confirmation email

• OEWD will email you on April 22, 2022 to let you know the status of your application

• Businesses that are accepted into the program will have 60 days to attend an educational webinar and complete a Program Agreement signed by the property owner they owe rent to.

• Applications will be prioritized based on certain criteria. The application is not first-come, first-served.
